Vertical garden in Madrid

French botanist Patrick Blanc designed this art installation of green plants growing on the wall. The wall covers the entirety of the wall located on the square in front of the rusted steel CaixaForum, a renovation of a former power house by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. Located in the heart of Madrid’s cultural district with museums like the Prado just down the road, the vertical garden resembles a piece of environmental graffiti as much as it is a botanical piece. The pattern of colors is a fascinating combination of art, architecture and botany!

In a city warmed by constant sun, people are always looking for some fresh air and this installation does just that, refresh! One can feel the drastic cooling effect of the wall when sitting next to it. Over 250 species are represented on the living wall and the self-irrigation keeps it green with drips of water that feed the plants and produce a cooling mist to visitors!
