Hokkaido is the northern island of Japan. It is well known for its nature wonders. This island offers many wide-open spaces, beautiful landscapes and great opportunities for outdoor activities. It accounts for a fifth of the total Japanese natural space.
One of the beautiful sights is the Tarumae gorge and the moss cavern Koke-no-domon. Mount Tarumae is located in the Shikotsu-Toya National Park, it is a 1’041 meters active volcano with a lava dome.
At the foot of Mount Tarumae on the north-west side you will find the impressive moss-covered cavern of Koke-no-domon, a mossy corridor region created by lava. It is 10 meters deep and 420 meters long and has 30 different types of moss.
Visitors can only enter the corridor between July and October and be aware that you will need to trek 20 minutes between the parking lot and the cavern entrance so wear comfortable clothes & shoes!
